Michigan officials are giving advice to those considering filing a claim for settlement money relating to water contamination at a North Carolina Marine base

Lawyers are lining up to offer services to anyone stationed at Camp Lejeune between 1953 and 1987 and experiencing certain illnesses.

Kevin Hensley with the “Veterans of Foreign Wars” says he hopes those impacted do their research with trusted groups before hiring a someone promising a large payout.

“I would really suggest to them to find an accredited service officer through the State of Michigan, whether it be the county, the veteran service organizations, the DAV, the American Legion, the VFW, talk to somebody about that.”

Hensley says certain agreements could potentially impact a veterans’ benefits.
