Officials from generic drug maker Perrigo announced Tuesday it had chosen the city of Grand Rapids to be home to its new North American headquarters. According to a news release, the company, which also manufactures personal care products, also considered southeast Florida and Chicago as possibilities, but the chance to operate on Grand Rapids Medical Mile was a key factor in the decision.

Perrigo expects the project to inject $45 million into the local economy and create 170 high-paying jobs.
In a Tuesday news release, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called the announcement “great news for Michigan workers, their families, and our economy,”
Perrigo’s headquarters will be part of the Michigan State University Innovation Park, which is under construction at the corner of Monroe Avenue and Michigan Street.
