The Grand Rapids comptroller suing the city over downsizing his office and transferring his duties – has been ousted from that job by voters

Incumbent Max Frantz lost a bid for reelection to David Bulkowski for Grand Rapids Comptroller – a position that serves as a public watchdog over the city’s financial operations.

Bulkowski is an attorney and the executive director of nonprofit Disability Advocates of Kent County.

His platform focused on oversight, accessibility, transparency and participatory budgeting.

Frantz has served as comptroller since 2019 and lost the race amid an ongoing lawsuit against the city.

He claims officials illegally downsized his office and transferred core accounting duties to a new department under City Manager Mark Washington without voter approval.

Frantz’s legal team has filed a summary disposition, arguing the changes violate the city charter and state law.

A hearing on the matter is scheduled for November 20th.
