It's only the second time in 40 years the Democratic Party has won majorities in both chambers

Both the Michigan House and Senate will be controlled by Democrats come January, according to the Associated Press.

That means Governor-elect Jocelyn Benson will serve the first two years of her term with a trifecta in the legislature.

Her predecessor, Governor Gretchen Whitmer had a similar Democratic majority in 2022.

In a video statement this morning, Whitmer touted achievements made during her term.

"Feeding our kids free breakfast and lunch, restoring workers' rights, passing historic gun violence prevention legislation, making pre-K and community college free, protecting access to healthcare and Medicaid, cutting taxes for families and seniors, and defending fundamental rights and freedoms."

This is only the second time in 40 years the Democratic Party has won majorities in both chambers.
