Jocelyn Benson celebrates winning the Michigan governorship

For the first time since 1961, one Michigan Democratic governor will hand off the office to another Democrat

The energy was high in Detroit as Democrats saw victories roll in from around the country.

Benson’s victory marks the first time in decades that two Michigan governors of the same political party serve back-to-back.

Benson says it’s also the first time two women will lead the state:

“As governor and lieutenant governor who will work together every day to ensure young girls and women always have access to the healthcare they need and the rights and freedoms they deserve.”

Benson defeated Republican John James.

Democrats also picked up some key seats in the state legislature—meaning it’ll be easier for Benson to pass her agenda.
