Two Grand Rapids-based organizations are launching a philanthropic initiative expanding leadership development opportunities and support systems for area women

According to a 2024 Indiana University’s Women’s Philanthropy Institute study, for every $100 donated to national charitable organizations, only $2 goes to groups dedicated to women and girls.

To address that funding gap locally, the Rockstar Woman Movement and its first-ever fiscal sponsor, Grow, are launching Build With Us, a $200,000 philanthropic initiative investing in building women’s leadership and entrepreneurial skills.

“It allows us as an entity that started as a social impact entity to receive charitable gifts so that people that want to support the life and sustainability of the Rockstar Woman Movement can do so and receive tax deductible benefits for their giving.”

Shannon Cohen founded Rockstar in 2019. The organization has impacted more than 7,000 women through its leadership development and community programming.

“We know that when she leads and when she’s invested in, everything and everyone connected to her elevates.”

Steve Jandernoa with initiative supporter 42 North Partners says investing in Grand Rapids means investing in women.

“Grand Rapids is blessed with a lot of rising women leaders in our community and it’s important for us to continue to invest in them. A lot of times they’re working moms; they have a lot of pressure on them at work and it’s important that we support them.”
