Barricades currently block the beach entrance to keep visitors safe and protect the sensitive dune ecosystem.
The new aluminum steps follow a more direct route from the top of dune through an area called “The Bowl” to the shoreline.
They replace a 32-year-old wooden staircase that was shut down for safety reasons in March 2025.
Parks and Recreation Commission Chairperson Brad Laninga updated the Laketown Township Board on the progress.
“They are about halfway down through The Bowl with the stairs. They’ve got quite a bit of work yet ahead of them, putting on rails and finishing up the project.”
The new steps are adjustable, allowing them to be raised or lowered as shifting sands alter the dunes, which will help prevent erosion.
Construction is slated to finish by the end of November.
Meanwhile, the township also applied for two state grants to fund future additions - including a viewing platform, benches, native landscaping, and parking lot stairs.
Those grant decisions are expected by the end of year.
