Plans to be revealed for Kent County's Indian Mounds Drive enhancements

Indian Mounds Drive - known for its local history and natural scenery - will receive a makeover, and Kent County wants your input

Indian Mounds Drive is a four-mile road and recreation lane running parallel to the Grand River from southwest Grand Rapids through Wyoming to Grandville.

The area is home to the Grand River Burial Mounds, one of the most significant indigenous burial mound sites in the Midwest.

The eleven mounds were created approximately 2,000 years ago and remain a significant cultural and spiritual site as the only surviving mound group in the lower Grand River Valley.

The corridor is across from Millennium Park and connects to the Kent Trails system in Wyoming.

It is also part of the Grand River Greenway – a network of trails, public parks, and nature areas linking communities from Lowell to the Lakeshore.

The Kent County Parks Department and its partners underwent a yearlong planning and design process, asking 2,000 community members to share input on making the riverfront corridor safer, more welcoming and better connected for people walking, biking and fishing while also protecting its cultural and ecological significance.

Residents are invited to an open house later this month to explore project plans, view design renderings and discuss proposals with leaders.

The Indian Mounds Drive open house is Wednesday October 28 from 5-7 at the Kent County Parks Department Administration Building on Butterworth.

Community members are encouraged but not required to register for the open house by filling out this online form.

For more information about the Indian Mounds Drive process and open house, visit kentcountymi.gov/IMD, where the full plan will be available on Thursday, Oct. 29.
