The deck would replace 72 parking spots being lost during an East Grand Rapids High School renovation project

Voters will decide on a $9 million bond proposal to build a new parking deck near Gaslight Village.

The parking deck would be built on the Bagley Avenue parking lot near the East Grand Rapids Performing Arts Center and would have four levels including the ground floor, totaling 240 parking spaces. The deck would replace 72 parking spots being lost during an East Grand Rapids High School renovation project.

If approved, the city would levy 0.5922 mills, or just over .59 cents for each $1,000 of taxable property value. According to city estimates, an East Grand Rapids resident with a home valued at $600,000 would pay around $150 a year in new taxes.

Parking in the ramp would be free, with the ground level open to the public. The top two decks would be reserved for students and school staff during school hours and open to the public during non-school hours.

The structure would require the city to install a new traffic signal at Bagley Avenue and Lake Drive, which would cost around $500,000.
