With an eye on the high cost of groceries and growing food insecurity, the Michigan Sustainable Business Forum is exploring the role corporate sponsors play in strengthening the charitable food system

“What we’re doing is allocating and donating refurbished refrigerators and freezers to food pantries, to that final mile.”

Kyle Trewhella is Senior Manager of Sustainable Sales at Benton Harbor-based Whirlpool.

“And our goal is to expand access to healthy food and healthy ingredients to those who need it.”

The corporation’s Feel Good Fridge program launched in 2020. It donates refurbished refrigerators and freezers to charitable food organizations like Feeding America, keeping food surplus from going bad before it can get to those who need it.

“This program started in the pandemic just seeing a rise in the food insecurity rates, and sadly it’s only gotten worse since 2021. If you look at the difference between ’21 and ’24, you see the same thing happening with youth hunger as well.”

At Lineage Foundation for Good, Executive Director Hannah Hoskins says it assists businesses scale food rescue infrastructure increasing access.

“We really welcome conversation and collaboration. We want to do this work with and for others, so please reach out.”

According to Feeding America, one in seven Michiganders currently struggle with food insecurity, including over 400,000 children.
