More help for families: opioid settlement dollars fuel statewide expansion of recovery residences

Michigan families struggling with substance addiction are receiving more help, with millions in opioid settlement dollars bringing hundreds of new recovery beds to local communities

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is partnering with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority to increase the number of recovery beds statewide.

Eighteen agencies were awarded $3.4 million to buy or lease 24 new recovery residences across 14 counties, providing 205 new beds.

Health Department CEO Amy Hovey says, “Recovery is about more than overcoming addiction. It’s about having the stability and support to rebuild your life and reconnect with the people and communities that matter most. Housing is foundational to that journey.”

The West Michigan organizations receiving the grant are: 70x7 Life Recovery in Kent County with 13 beds, Building Men for Life in Ottawa with 10 beds, Latitude Recovery in Kalamazoo with 8 beds and Randy’s House of Greenville in Montcalm with 12 beds.

In the last few months, more than $12 million in opioid settlement dollars has been awarded to more than 50 agencies offering community-based support and recovery residences.

The state is slated to receive $1.8 billion from national opioid settlements by 2040.
