The 61st District Court in Grand Rapids is now offering evening sessions handling small claims cases.
The new Night Court starts at 5 p.m., accommodating residents who otherwise can’t attend court during normal business hours due to work schedules or transportation issues.
These new sessions run once a month and are conducted online via Zoom video conferencing, with Magistrate Bria Adderley-Williams presiding over the virtual docket.
Parties involved in a small claims case receive notifications on how to join their virtual hearing and submit evidence in advance.
Chief Judge Angela T. Ross stated, “Access to justice should reflect the realities of people’s daily lives. We are excited to offer Virtual Night Court so residents can resolve small claims disputes without a lawyer and with fewer barriers related to work, transportation, and family responsibilities.”
The small claims division of the 61st District Court handles money disputes up to $7,000 with parties representing themselves. Cases must originate in Grand Rapids proper or involve defendants who live or work in the city.
