The lawsuit argues “Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan” worked with other Blue-branded companies to keep competition out.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says that’s illegal under state and federal anti-trust laws.
“Competition is good, not just for the quality of care but of course to bring down prices. And that’s the purpose of the anti-trust laws in the first place, that it allows us to break up these big monopolies that are so harmful.”
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan says it disagrees with the allegations and that it does face plenty of competition.
A 2025 American Medical Association report lists BCBSM as controlling over 65 percent of Michigan’s health insurance market.
