Kristin Pennock's Sketchdiet: A Year of Drawing Everything I Ate wins ArtPrize 2026 public vote Grand Prize

A year’s worth of meals turned into art is this year’s winner of the Public Grand Prize as the three-week competition concludes

Kristin Pennock’s Sketchdiet: A Year of Drawing Everything I Ate was announced Saturday as the winner of the $100,000 public vote Grand Award.

The piece includes nine 24-foot custom sketchbooks displayed at Devos Place on which Pennock drew what she ate as she traveled through six countries, recording details of food and friends for each meal.

“We are differentiating ArtPrize from other art competitions by sending this art piece intergalactic.”

Grand Rapids City Manager Mark Washington announced the award at Saturday’s closing ceremony, noting the winning piece will go to space on a satellite.

“Not the entire piece but it will be digitized and placed on a laser-engraved plaque and sent into the low orbit of the Earth.”

The $100,0000 juried Grand Prize went to Robert Horvath for Room for Lost Paradise; an installation made of hand-painted watercolors on paper displayed at Herrema & Sons Piano Company.

In another first this year, ArtPrize made the Guinness Book of World Records for largest attendance at a fashion show with 3,618 people attending the display of local designer RC Caylan’s work at closing ceremonies at the Acrisure Amphitheater.
Winners of the other categories can be found on the ArtPrize website.
