A former Grand Rapids elementary school building is coming down and its footprint reimagined, saving taxpayers money

Grand Rapids’ Board of Education unanimously approved plans to turn the former Beckwith School property into public green space. The district aims to expand recreational opportunities for neighbors while preserving the site for possible future needs.

The Beckwith Elementary School, at the corner of Leonard Street and Plymouth Avenue Northeast, closed in 2002. Kent Intermediate School District used the building for an adult education program and, most recently, it was used as office space for GRPS staff.

The building costs the district $225,000 annually to maintain and requires repairs to its HVAC system, roof, and parking lot, totaling $1.5 million. The board determined that demolishing the building was a more responsible investment, which is expected to cost around $600,000.

Board of Education President Jose Rodriguez stated, “This decision allows the Beckwith School property to once again add value to our neighbors while allowing our district to hold onto the property for a school in the future if enrollment dictates.”

Demolition is expected to take place next year.
