Monday night, the Grand Rapids Board of Education approved a shift in the school district’s Reimagine Plan timeline.
Alger Middle School’s relocation to Ottawa Hills High School will now be delayed by one year, moving to the 2026-27 school year. Consequently, Brookside Elementary’s move to the renovated Alger site will also be postponed by a year, moving to the 2027-28 school year. The new timeline will allow the conversion of the Alger building into an elementary school to happen while the school is empty during the 2026-27 school year.
With this adjustment, two other projects will now happen early.
Renovations at Kent Hills Elementary, the district’s fastest growing school, will now be completed in 2026, and renovations at City High Middle School’s Performing Arts Center will also finish in 2026.
According to GRPS, the administration team and school leaders recommended the timeline shift due to staffing numbers at Alger Middle and Ottawa Hills being at levels not seen in more than a decade. Leaders believe an additional year of culture-building will create a more successful joining of the two schools.
