During a vigil at the tree in Grand Rapids where 35-year-old undocumented immigrant Mario David Coronado Juarez crashed and died Sunday morning, Karla Barberi blamed ICE agents for his death.
“For the agents that were involved, I pray you don’t have a second of peace until you come forward and confess what happened.”
Homeland Security says they tried to stop the vehicle Coronado Juarez was driving because the license plate was registered to someone, not Coronado Juarez, but someone, in the US illegally with alcohol related driving offenses. And when the vehicle took off at high speed, they ended what they call the “enforcement action”.
“We don't know what Mario was thinking and feeling.”
In a YouTube post Grand Rapids mayor David LaGrand says Coronado Juarez may have tried to escape because he was an undocumented immigrant and he was afraid because ICE agents have killed and wounded other immigrants.
“A national effort to create fear among our immigrant neighbors.”
Homeland security says ICE agents were half-a-mile away when Coronado Juarez crashed into the tree.
“It is clear that Mario fled from ICE agents prior to the crash. ICE’s national pattern of intimidation, harassment, and killing has to stop.”
