The military term "stand down" refers to a combat unit stepping back from the field to a safe area for rest, recovery and resupply.
That philosophy drives the Kent County Veterans Services event.
“Right before the winter and the fall, it gives a chance for at-risk and homeless veterans to come here and get connected with resources in our community.”

“Maybe those resources will get them off the streets. Maybe it will help them with substance abuse. This is an event where we basically bring them all together, and we try to help them get to their next step.”
More than 70 vendors and 35 volunteer groups provided physical, mental and dental health care, along with blankets, hygiene kits, haircuts, housing and job resources.
“It's like coming home, you know?”
Richard Cole served two tours in the Marines and came to the event mostly for the camaraderie with fellow vets.
“Dealing with drug additions and things of that nature. You know, but God's been good to me all my life, and I can't complain. I came out of the Corps. I came out ok compared to some of my fellow vets, so, you know, I thank God for that.”
Due to construction, this year’s event moved to Millennium Park in Walker with free shuttle service from Grand Rapids.
