Grand Rapids-based Upcycle Bikes refurbishes used adult bicycles and donates them to individuals facing financial constraints.
“Bicycles can be legitimate transportation and they’re a great option when a bus route’s not running or when you need to leave to an odd location or at an odd time. It gives users the independence to really access the community when they need to.”
In April, Matt Jaglowski took over as executive director when Rick Armbruster stepped down assuming the role of special projects manager.
“And we started strategic planning because we are growing extremely fast and we all want to see the organization succeed, not only in the short-term, but well beyond all of us.”
When Upcycle launched in 2022, it repaired and donated 65 bikes. So far this year, it’s donated 1,100, with over 4,000 bikes now in the community. Jaglowski says the need continues to grow.
“The feedback we get is that the biggest challenge that organizations have providing for their neighbors is housing, but once that’s resolved, the second biggest challenge is transportation.”
