Late last week, crews from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy responded to an oil leak from a previously plugged oil well in one of the park’s lakes.
Workers deployed a containment boom to prevent the spill from spreading and are securing a contractor to re-plug the well as soon as possible.
The cause of the leak remains unknown, though EGLE notes the wellhead – originally plugged to 1945 standards – has deteriorated over time submerged underwater.
Investigators hope to confirm the cause during repairs.
Millennium Park visitors should avoid the affected lake located east of Maynard Avenue SW.
The area lacks public access and does not connect to the public beach.
EGLE is inspecting nearby active and historic wells but does not anticipate further leaks.
