Healthcare leaders say the expansion is needed to meet rising patient demand and modernize West Michigan’s only Level 1 Trauma Center.

“We're seeing about 2.5% population growth over the next decade. And so, it's really important for us to be able to care for the community and provide access for that growing population as well as we have an aging population too.”
The $1.34 billion dollars facility at the Butterworth Campus will include 180 private patient rooms, 17 operating rooms, a hyperbaric chamber and an expanded emergency department.
The current ER has operated at 90% capacity for the past year.
While the 11-story design requires city approval due to its record height on the Medical Mile, leaders note the vertical design keeps the overall footprint compact and separates it from neighboring properties.
“We have taken a lot of things into consideration as we design this particular space, thinking about the neighborhood, also thinking about Meijer Heart Center and how we can ensure privacy for patients in thisnew tower. And the ability to keep patients here on the Medical Mile.”
Corewell’s existing facilities at Michigan Street NE and Barclay Avenue NE are scheduled for demolition in summer 2027.
