Canadian officials vow to retaliate against new US tariffs after trade talks broke down last week.
The Trump administration is adding 50 percent tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, from certain building materials to hockey equipment. US officials argue the move is necessary to address a trade imbalance.
But over the weekend, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said recent trade talks collapsed because the US wanted to curb Canada’s ability to make deals with other countries.
“We cannot accept what they’ve offered and we will not give what they’ve asked. The United States has continually changed their rationale for these actions, from fentanyl to taxes on US tech giants, to the sharing of tolls of a bridge that Canada built and paid for.”
US officials say the trade deal fell through because Canada made extra demands at the last minute. Now Carney says Canada will match US tariffs dollar-for-dollar beginning in a few weeks.
