As Grand Rapids’ Calvin University launches its new School of Engineering and Computer Science, leaders focus on the ethical questions facing tomorrow’s graduates

Equipping graduates for fields like cybersecurity, robotics and aerospace can be challenging, says Interim Provost Kevin den Dulk.

Technical expertise alone isn’t enough in a world increasingly shaped by emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.

“We're going to make sure that our students have the best technical training, but that technical training can never be disconnected from understanding what it means to live in community, what it means to be an ethical human being who is trying to live well with others, and not abuse them through the use of these technologies.”

The new School of Engineering and Computer Science brings together the university’s long-established programs, providing leadership across various disciplines that all weigh the ethical issues of emerging technology.

“The School of Engineering and Computer Science is a center of gravity for a lot of that thinking, a lot of that work, and we're very excited to have a school that's really helping us think through these kinds of issues in service to the broader community, but also to our internal community here at Calvin where these kinds of questions cut across just about everything we do.”

Leaders will explore these topics this fall when Calvin hosts the "Wisdom in the Age of AI" conference in early October.

It is open to the public.
