As grocery prices continue to climb, Kids’ Food Basket is busy serving around 11,500 evening meals each weekday to students attending 68 schools in Kent, Muskegon, Ottawa and Allegan Counties, with more than 20 schools on a waiting list.
Now, AmeriCorps is partnering with KFB to combat food insecurity throughout West Michigan. This fall, nine AmeriCorps members will serve one-year focusing on farm-to-school education and gain volunteer experience expanding KFB’s current capabilities.
“This year, we’re allocating about $25 million in federal and other funds that we received.”
Robert Kolt is Chairman of the Michigan Community Service Commission, which is responsible for the grant funding the program.
“It has been a terrific program and we really want AmeriCorps funding to continue. People on both sides of the political aisle have understood its importance and service to Michigan communities.”
Last year, the Trump administration attempted to slash nearly $400 million in AmeriCorps grants and place 90% of agency staff on leave. A 24-state lawsuit ultimately led to the administration reversing course and releasing over $184 million in withheld funding.
