The income guidelines for Michigan’s Women, Infants, and Children Program, or WIC, have been adjusted according to new federal guidelines. Under the updated income eligibility requirements, a family of four may now qualify with an annual income of up to $61,050, an increase of over $1,500.
WIC is a U.S. Department of Agriculture program administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The program provides supplemental food, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support. It also makes health and social service referrals. Low- and moderate-income pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women as well as children under the age of 5 are eligible for assistance.
Approximately 187,000 Michigan residents benefit from WIC each month. MDHHS reports the program has proven to reduce the number of fetal deaths and infant mortality, along with decreasing low birth weight deliveries, and increasing immunization rates.
