Michigan is reporting more than 10,000 confirmed and probable cases of the disease cyclosporiasis
Michigan health officials say there was a jump in the number of cases recently, in part because some hospital systems had backlogs that led to delays in reporting.
At least 160 patients have been hospitalized due to the disease, which can cause cramping and explosive diarrhea.
But Michigan’s Chief Medical Executive, Doctor Natasha Bagdasarian, tells NBC News fewer people appear to be seeking treatment for gastro-intestinal issues now.
Experts tied the massive increase in cyclosporiasis to contaminated lettuce, but state and federal investigators say they are still trying to confirm the precise source of the outbreak.
