A statement from the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority says Friday's ribbon-cutting won’t take place while unspecified issues between the U.S. and Canada are resolved

Governor Gretchen Whitmer says she expects the Gordie Howe International Bridge will open soon. That’s after the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority announced Friday’s ribbon-cutting won’t take place while unspecified issues between the U.S. and Canada are resolved.

The $4.4B project has been under construction since 2018 and the Democratic governor says she sees this pause in opening the bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor-Ontario as a temporary setback.

Ac1 “Michigan is ready to move forward and we’re hoping that we can do that in the next few days or weeks.”

Whitmer has cultivated a cordial working relationship with the President Donald Trump even while opposing him on tariffs and other policies. The president has said he’s not satisfied with some aspects of the deal with Canada, which has picked up the costs that will be reimbursed from a portion of the tolls.
