A federal official says the U.S. and Canada are still negotiating a date for when a new bridge between Detroit and Windsor will officially open

The Gordie Howe International Bridge was set to open this spring.

It was paid for by Canada, which planned to make-up the cost of construction through toll fares.

After that, it would split the toll money with Michigan.

But the U.S. Ambassador to Canada, former Michigan Congressman Pete Hoekstra, says the project is billions of dollars over-budget and border traffic is down.

He questions if Michigan will ever see proceeds from tolls.

President Trump recently threatened to forbid the bridge from opening unless the U.S. was “fully compensated” even though it’s owned by Canada and Michigan, not the federal government.

Trump’s statement came after his administration reportedly met with the owner of Detroit’s Ambassador Bridge, which would compete for traffic with the new Gordie Howe span.
