With Memorial Day weekend upon us, the City of Grand Rapids is reminding community members to handle fireworks safely. The Grand Rapids Fire Department says fireworks can be dangerous to people, pets and property, especially in crowded neighborhoods or areas with dry grass or brush.
Fire Marshal Bill Smith says in a news release, “Fireworks can cause serious damage if they’re not used responsibly.”
As a reminder, the city allows consumer fireworks only during certain times around specific holidays. For Memorial Day weekend, fireworks are allowed only on the Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day, and only until 11:45 p.m.
Violating the fireworks ordinance can lead to a civil fine of up to $1,000 for each offense.
If you’re going to use fireworks, Grand Rapids Fire officials offer some safety tips to help you stay safe and prevent injuries.They include reading and following all instructions. Keep a bucket of water or a water hose nearby.Never let children handle fireworks and remember, sparklers burn hot enough to cause serious burns.
