“This is a profound loss for our community.”
When the medical emergency that ended the life of Walker fire chief Russel Shoultz was called in Friday morning Mayor Gary Carey says first responders from the Walker police and fire departments were dispatched.
“These are individuals who train together, respond to emergencies together and rely on one another in the most critical moments. They are grieving the loss of one of their own.”
Chief Shoultz was 52.
“We will not be sharing additional details regarding the circumstances of his passing at this time.”
Shoultz was an Air Force and Coast Guard veteran. Before coming to Walker, he had leadership roles in Mississippi fire departments and with the Louisiana fire marshal’s office. He was appointed Walker fire chief last July.
“In a relatively short time his impact has been both immediate and lasting.”
The mayor says Shoultz emphasized training and community engagement and says he is remembering and mourning the man behind the uniform.
“A leader, a colleague, a friend and our community is stronger because of his service.”
