The city of Grand Rapids continues to address gun violence with its free teen summer programs taking place on weekend evenings

In 2024, there were 13 homicides in the city of Grand Rapids. In 2025, there were 14. In response to these incidents, the city is continuing with its free summer violence prevention programs, known as “It Takes a Village.” Civilian Violence Prevention & Intervention Manager for Grand Rapids’ Office of Oversight and Public Accountability Latesha Lipscombe:

“Violence is a public health epidemic because it spreads through our community like any other disease, inflicting physical harm, traumatizing families, and cutting lives short.”

Lipscombe says over 400 teens took part in last year’s programs that give youth positive activities in safe spaces on summer nights.

“By working together as we have to prevent harm and invest in people, we can build neighborhoods where everybody has the opportunity not only to survive, but to truly, truly thrive.”

The three free programs are City Vibes, Nightquest and Freestyle Fridays and are hosted in the 1st and 3rd Wards. Youth ages 12 to 17 can participate in sports, music, art, games, and other activities on Friday and Saturday evenings from June 8th through September 9th. More information can be found on the city’s website.
