Gordie Howe International Bridge under construction in 2024

Windsor, Ontario mayor Drew Dilkens says he was surprised to see President Trump’s threat to block the nearly complete Gordie Howe International Bridge from opening this week

Dilkens says the new bridge was a result of 25 years of diplomacy between the U.S. and Canada, and points out that Donald Trump has supported the project in the past.

The Windsor mayor points a finger at the Moroun family.

The billionaire owners of the Ambassador Bridge met with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick hours before Trump threatened the Gordie Howe Bridge.

“You know I’m not sure what the billionaires are doing behind the scenes… but we’re really interested in the families that are affected by this on both sides of the border.”

Dilkens says retaliating by blocking the Ontario side of the Ambassador Bridge is not something Canada would consider, regardless of the Trump Administration’s stance on the new span.
