“So, zoning is kind of that legal tool or the ordinance that helps regulate how land can be used.”
That’s Grand Rapids’ Planning Director Kristin Turkelson.
“What types of buildings can be built, how they can be designed, and so we update it pretty frequently over time.”
Turkelson says current zoning ordinances don’t necessarily align with community feedback that shaped the Bridge to Our Future master plan adopted in late 2024. Zone GR is designed to modernize the rules that shape how the city grows based on public input.
“We want to make sure that we are supporting the new goals that were outlined within the Bridge to Our Future plan.”
Community feedback emphasized more housing options, walkable business districts and a healthier environment.
“I hope that people stay interested, stay engaged. I think that that’s just really critical. Help make sure that we have a community that is inclusive and meeting the needs of everybody that wants to be here.”
Zone GR happens May 12th from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Grand Rapids Public Library downtown. You can register and learn more at GrandRapidsMI.gov/ZoneGR
