According to Grand Haven’s north pier project documents from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a federal contractor is installing a wave dampening feature making the Grand River channel safer for boats.
The feature, known as a wave attenuator, is essentially a large pile of stones for absorbing wave action, placed at strategic locations along the pier where they’ll be most effective, allowing smoother passage for boats.
The $9.25 million project was first announced in 2022. The Army Corps of Engineers has allocated $7.5 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and $2 million from 2022’s annual spending budget.
Officials say the north pier has not received major upgrades since the 1950’s. Work is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. during warm months and weather dependent. The pier will be open for holidays and major events, like the Coast Guard Festival.
Work is expected to be completed during the summer of 2028.
