“This is the bridge that’s 100 years old. It’s on the east side of the northbound ramp, so it’s not the section that goes over 131.”
That’s MDOT Grand Region Communications Representative John Richard. He says the bridge being demolished and replaced was originally built in the 1920’s to cross the numerous railroad tracks that are still prominent in the area.
“So, the section of MLK over 131 will close, but the bridge that will be replaced is to the east of the northbound on and off ramps and goes for about 200 feet east of Buchanan.”
Richard says the reason both bridges aren’t being replaced is because the section spanning 131 was built with the highway and is therefore not as old as the section to the east.
“And there will be another public meeting in mid-March. We’re not exactly sure on the date yet, but it’ll be within the next month.”
Bridge demolition will be weather dependent and is scheduled for the second week of April, with traffic being detoured via Hall Street and Division and Century Avenues. Northbound US-131 ramps will be closed with southbound ramps remaining open. Work should wrap up mid-November.
