The Ottawa County Parks and Recreation Commission is recommending an updated Parks and Open Space millage

The original Ottawa County Parks & Recreation millage was approved by voters in 1996 and has been renewed twice, in 2006 and 2016, each time at a rate of 0.33 mills.

Pending approval by the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners, the proposed 0.53-mill rate would be considered by voters this year. It’s estimated the millage would generate over $102 million from 2027-2036. For a resident with a home valued at $400,000, the proposed 0.53-mill rate would cost the homeowner around $69 annually.

This recommendation stems from extensive public engagement and a countywide survey, which shows a strong demand for more access to natural areas, better trail connections, and continued conservation efforts. According to the department, Ottawa County’s park system generates around $6 in local economic impact for every $1 invested through the millage.

A list of projects associated with the millage increase can be found here.
