Bob Sullivan is being remembered across West Michigan as a supporter of sports and a contributor to community.
Steve Tibbe is the director of operations for Fans of Valley Field, a nonprofit group working to revitalize the historic Grand Rapids ballpark re-named in Sullivan’s honor.
“His legacy represents more than just his name on the field, represents dedication, sportsmanship, and a lifelong connection to the spirit of Grand Rapids in its community. “
The longtime businessman owned Sullivan’s Carpet and Furniture on 28th Street with its iconic advertising jingle.
Sullivan was a former Detroit Tigers scout, sending 60 players and four managers to Major League Baseball, working with players including Willie Horton, Kirk Gibson, and Al Kaline.
He also owned the Grand Rapids Sullivans baseball team which played at Valley Field on the city’s west side, previously home to the Grand Rapids Black Sox.
“His life span of nearly a century of this history and was so integrated into Grand Rapids. The field that bears his name is a living reminder of the impact that one individual can have on a local community.”
Sullivan sponsored boxing, football and basketball teams, and started Little League baseball in Grand Rapids.
Details on a public memorial are expected to be announced soon.
