In a 4-3 vote, the Cascade Township Board of Trustees approved a zoning ordinance amendment that includes six core principles outlined in a township memo. They include protecting single-family neighborhoods, preserving rural character in eastern areas, upgrading the 28th Street corridor, enhancing the village’s architectural style, making township goals easy to achieve while discouraging contrary development and demanding quality development standards.
Those changes come after the township updated its master plan and adopted it in July 2024.
Since then, there’s been opposition by some residents. Real estate agent Julie Rockwell says an economic study should have been conducted before the amendment was brought to a vote.
“The people making the decisions, who are clearly a small number influencing this group and a very thin majority, may have no experience doing these changes.”
Others, like resident Tyler Johnson, think the new ordinance will benefit the township.
“Cascade is a great place to live and raise a family, but right now, we have a real gap. If you’re a young professional, a teacher, a nurse, a police officer, there are simply just not enough housing options in the township that fit real life and real budgets.”
