Almost a mile of skywalk connects downtown Grand rapids buildings, businesses and venues

“To enhance the messaging throughout the skywalk and hopefully decrease the confusion.”

Downtown development authority director of operations Melvin Eledge says they walked and inspected the entire downtown skywalk system, nine tenths of a mile:

“Looking for new opportunities for us to expand or enhance signage. We identified handful of those for either replacing existing signage or adding new signage that didn’t exist.”

Using those discoveries Eledge says they plan to replace or add 24 signs to the skywalk.

“Which will be much brighter, easier to see, provide better direction as well as adding more symbols for folks just for ease of communication.”

The carpeted, climate-controlled skywalks connect downtown businesses. buildings, restaurants and venues. But some people find them confusing, and development authority member Greg McNeilly isn’t sure how much the signs will help.

“Having encountered a lot of confused pedestrians in there I would encourage you to temper your optimism for what this will resolve. Nobody notices new signs as much as I would like them to. We just kind of keep looking at the system as kind of a living and evolving organism. We are going to put things in we will see how they work and if we need to replace them it is pretty inexpensive and relatively easy.”
