In a statement to reporters, a spokesperson with the Department of Homeland Security claims the facility will bring nearly 1,500 jobs to the area. And just under $150 million in economic activity.
Last week, Romulus Mayor Robert McCraight said ICE secured a building about 6 miles northwest of Detroit Metro Airport.
McCraight said that the detention center would be opposed by the city at all levels and he is working with legal counsel to determine what authority the city has to stop it.
A protest is planned for next Monday’s Romulus city council meeting.
