Michigan’s Secretary of State is releasing the findings of her investigation into claims of non-citizens being registered to vote in Macomb County.
Of the 15 cases the department looked into, Secretary Jocelyn Benson says three were citizens. Others either already had their registration canceled or had more information requested to verify their status.
Benson says officials need to be careful about how they address concerns around potential non-citizen voters.
“Approaching this issue with a sledgehammer and not a scalpel can lead to the disenfranchisement of eligible voters.”
Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini first raised the concerns after some residents refused jury duty, claiming they weren’t citizens.
Two of the potential non-citizens had a voting history. One was removed from the voter rolls after last casting a ballot eight years ago. The state is still looking into the last person, who voted in 2024.
