The West Michigan surgeon was the first in Michigan certified on the specialized equipment

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Derick Johnson is the first surgeon in West Michigan certified to use the Mako Smart Robotics system for partial and total knee replacements in 2018.

“Now we're doing approximately probably 250, at least in my practice, of knees that way on a day-to-day basis.”

The Mako technology offers precision surgery minimizing soft-tissue damage, leading to faster recovery times and better long-term outcomes for patients.

“At least a lot easier transition and getting a range of motion back quicker, getting patients back to activities or jobs or whatever, kind of pursuing things they need to do after the surgery itself.”

Holland Hospital Vice President of Clinical Operations Joe Bonello stresses another benefit.

“It's really important for us to be able to provide service to the community and be able to bring excellent clinical quality care and state of the art technology to our region so that people can get the care that they need right here close to home and not have to travel outside of our region for it. “

Holland Hospital has been recognized by Healthgrades as being in the top 10% nationally for orthopedic surgery and joint replacement excellence, three years in a row.
