State Attorney General Dana Nessel has a holiday consumer protection campaign. And this week she’s highlighting a few issues that consumers need to pay attention to.
To start, there’s “social media spoofing”.If there’s a “too-good-to-be-true” post, you should check the URL and look for the lock symbol to confirm the authenticity of the website.Regarding charitable giving, the AG’s office advises you verify organizations through the IRS database.
Also, be sure to track your packages and use secure delivery options to avoid porch pirates. And to prevent falling victim to hackers and ransomware attacks, keep your devices updated and avoid suspicious links.
To help Michigan residents stay safe from scams, identity theft and other deceptive schemes, AG Nessel recently launched a new consumer protection social media account. It’s @MIConsumerWatch. There you can find info on scam alerts, consumer tips and more.
