The Kent County Department of Public Works or DPW recently released its Holiday Recycling Guide. It’s an annual guide meant to help residents reduce waste and increase recycling during holiday festivities.
Here’s Emma Dillman, Waste Reduction Educator with the DPW:
“Our recycling guide is focused on specific holiday items that can go in your bin, as well as common items we find at the center that people might think can be recycled but may have to go to a different location.”
So, for instance, Dillman says you should and can recycle glass bottles and jars, cartons, cardboard, paper and metal cans. However, you should NOT take things like grocery store plastic bags, frying oil, toys and one of the biggest to avoid, is batteries. They have specific centers for battery recycling.
Dillman also says the guide is increasingly important to make sure residents know what can and cannot be recycled to protect those handling recycled items.
“ANYTHING that is not acceptable has a likelihood of either damaging a machine or injuring workers because they are not of the correct shape or size for our machines to handle.”
