A Grand Rapids man will spend two years in prison for threatening to kill President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance

Grand Rapids resident James Donald Vance Jr. was sentenced Monday to two years in federal prison for posting online threats against President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and one of Trump’s children.

In March and April 2025, Vance Jr. posted to social media service Bluesky, “If tRump, Vance or Musk ever come to my city again, they will leave in a body bag.”

The 67-year-old pled guilty to two felony offenses: threatening to kill or injure the president and vice president and interstate threatening communications. Each violation carries a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

In a separate incident, Richard James Spring of Comstock Park was sentenced in October to 18 months in prison and fined $2,000 for also threatening to kill the President.

Both matters were investigated by the United States Secret Service Grand Rapids office.
