Corewell Health was awarded a three-year grant from Action for Women’s Health focusing on postpartum care.
“While a lot of the work that we’re doing has to do with the pregnancy and it kind of ends once the woman gives birth, this grant would allow us to follow those families up to 18 months after delivery and continue to provide programs, products, services, support.”
Carlos Cubia is Corewell Health’s Chief Community Health Impact and Belonging Officer.
“Preliminary data shows that it will increase the opportunity for a baby to have a healthy life ad to get past that first year of life.”
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, between 2016 and 2020, nearly 60% of the state’s pregnancy-associated deaths occurred more than 43 days after childbirth.
“We found that there is care that’s needed after delivery in many different areas. It may not necessarily be clinical care; it could be mental health, it could be training, it could be education.”
Over 4,000 organizations applied for the grant. Corewell Health was one of over 80 awardees. Per the funder’s rules, the exact dollar amount was not disclosed.
