The Grand Rapids Water System announced it will not turn off residents' water due to unpaid bills

Residents having trouble paying their water or sewer bills are catching a break: Grand Rapids will not turn off water because of unpaid bills until further notice.

In social media posts, the city notes the move is in response to the impact of the federal government shutdown.

It began on October first and is now the nation’s longest government shutdown with Democrats and Republicans at a stalemate over heath care subsidies.

The water system notice also lists agencies that offer assistance to those who cannot pay their water or sewer bill including Kent County Community Action, the Department of
Health and Human Services and United Way’s 211 line.
