“We're looking for organizations and individuals to partner with the city of Grand Rapids at a level of $10,000 to reduce gun violence in our community, specifically gun violence that is around 12 to 24 -year-olds and then we're looking to hear these great ideas.”
Asante Cain, Assistant to the City Manager, says leaders are looking to the community for guidance and ideas.
“Anything’s possible, right? They can be anything as simple as an additional recreational opportunity to help young people find alternatives to violence.”
Past proposals include mental health programs for those affected by violence, video game alternatives to spending time in danger-prone areas, and mentoring opportunities.
Proposed programs must take place March through September next year.
“It's not a very complicated application so if people have good ideas, we're happy to hear them.”
Nonprofits and individuals can submit proposals by 5 PM October 23 through the SAFE Task Force website, and five will be chosen to move to the next round.
Those selected will then have five minutes to present their idea at SAFE’s Pitch and Highlight Night on October 28.
