Multiple criminal investigations have been launched in recent years into allegations that earmark recipients misused state funds.
A new bill aims to address that. It would require public disclosure of earmarks before they’re included in the budget and create more oversight to make sure recipients deliver on promises.
Democratic Senate Appropriations Chair Sarah Anthony says it has taken too long for the state to get its money back in the past.
“It should be very clear and very quick to receive those funds back. And this legislation will help to address that in the future.”
The bill is part of a compromise struck with the Republican-led House of Representatives during budget negotiations.
