Grand Rapids to break ground on Oxford Trail project

Grand Rapids officials will break ground on improvements to the city’s Oxford Trail project later today

“So, there’s an existing trail that starts just off of Wealthy on the west side of the river and it goes through the Butterworth landfill area, travels across the river on a pedestrian bridge, and then eventually stops at Oxford Street.”

Project Manager for Grand Rapids’ Parks Department Karie Enriquez says it’s that section that will receive improvements.

“We’re also going to extend, so create a new trail, from Oxford Street that goes all the way down to Hall, and the goal eventually is to continue that trail from Hall south all the way down to Roosevelt Park.”

Improvements include a new universally accessible playground, exercise equipment, lighting, half-court basketball area, shelters and an amphitheater.

“It’s a $9 million dollar project, $8 million dollars of that is from the Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. They received a greenway grant through the state with COVID funding, and then a million dollars is from city-allocated ARPA funding as well.”

The public is invited to a groundbreaking ceremony at 5 pm today on Oxford Street between Godfrey Avenue and Norwich Avenue Southeast.
